Getting Started with KineMaster: A Complete Beginner's Guide
KineMaster is one of the most powerful video editors available on mobile devices. If you've just installed it and aren't sure where to begin, this guide will walk you through everything from creating your first project to exporting a finished video.
Step 1: Install KineMaster
KineMaster is available for free on both platforms:
- Android: Download from the Google Play Store.
- iOS: Download from the Apple App Store.
The free version is fully functional but adds a watermark to your exported videos. You can remove this with a subscription. For learning purposes, the free version is perfectly fine to start with.
Step 2: Understand the Main Screen
When you open KineMaster, you'll see the project dashboard. Here you can:
- Create a new project by tapping the "+" button.
- Open recent projects to continue editing.
- Access the Asset Store for additional content.
Step 3: Create a New Project
- Tap the "+" or "New Project" button.
- Choose your project's aspect ratio. Common choices:
- 16:9 — Landscape, ideal for YouTube.
- 9:16 — Portrait, ideal for TikTok, Reels, Shorts.
- 1:1 — Square, good for Instagram feed posts.
- Tap Select to open the editor.
Step 4: Add Your Media
Once inside the editor, you'll see an empty timeline at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap the Media button in the right-side panel.
- Browse your phone's camera roll or files.
- Tap clips or photos to select them — they'll be added to the timeline in the order you tap them.
- Tap the checkmark to confirm your selection.
Step 5: Basic Editing — Trim, Split, and Reorder
With clips on the timeline, you can perform basic edits:
- Trim: Tap a clip, then drag the yellow handles at either end to shorten it.
- Split: Move the playhead (white vertical line) to the point you want to cut, tap the clip, then tap the Scissors icon.
- Delete: Tap a clip and tap the Trash icon to remove it.
- Reorder: Press and hold a clip on the timeline, then drag it to a new position.
Step 6: Add Transitions
Between clips on the timeline, you'll see a small square icon. Tapping this opens the transition menu. Choose from:
- None (hard cut — the default)
- Fade, Wipe, Dissolve, Zoom, and many more
Keep transitions consistent and purposeful — overusing flashy transitions is a common beginner mistake.
Step 7: Add Text and Music
Text: Tap the Layer button (➕) → Text → type your caption and customise the font, colour, and size.
Music: Tap the Layer button (➕) → Audio → browse your files or the Asset Store to add a background track.
Step 8: Export Your Video
- Tap the Share/Export button (usually an arrow or upload icon in the top-right).
- Choose your export resolution — 1080p at 30fps is a solid default for most uses.
- Tap Export and wait for the render to complete.
- Your video will be saved to your device's gallery.
Beginner Mistakes to Avoid
- Don't add too many transitions — a simple cut often looks more professional.
- Keep your total layer count manageable to avoid performance issues.
- Always preview your full video before exporting.
- Save your project regularly — KineMaster does auto-save, but manual saves are a good habit.
With these basics under your belt, you're ready to explore KineMaster's more advanced features. Start with simple projects and gradually experiment with layers, effects, and colour adjustments as you grow more confident.
